California Jurisprudence Exam (CAL-LAW) Study Guide

Below is the study guide I created while studying for my CAL-LAW exam. With the use of this study guide I was able to pass my exam confidently on my first attempt by only studying 30-60 minutes for a couple days prior to the exam.

As long as you have the right information to study, this test is very easy. Below is that right information, I hope it helps you like it helped me!

Article 1: Administration

  • Highest Priority of the California Physical Therapy Board=protection of the public
  • Board Composition: 
    • 1 PT involved in Education of PTs
    • 3 licensed PTs, >5 years experience
    • 3 Members of the Public without any medical license or association to PT programs
  • The Governor appoints all the PTs and 1 member of the public
    • The Senate Rules Committee and the Speaker of the Assembly shall each appoint a public member
    • (Appointing powers can also remove board members for neglect or incompetency)
  • Terms: 4 year terms, expiring the first day of June
    • Can NOT serve more than 2 consecutive terms
  • The PT Board IS allowed to hire assistants or other PTs to help out with some of their duties
  • Board Duties
    •  Issue, suspend, and revoke licenses and approvals to practice physical therapy
    • Hold at least 1 annual meeting in accordance with the Bagley Keene Open Meeting Act (must notify public and make meeting public)
    • Hold Hearings: including but not limited to, any contested case or any petition for reinstatement, restoration, or modification of probation

Article 2: General Provisions

  • Physical Therapy Definition
    • means the art and science of physical or corrective rehabilitation or of physical or corrective treatment of any bodily or mental condition of any person by the use of the physical, chemical, and other properties of heat, light, water, electricity, sound, massage, and active, passive, and resistive exercise, and shall include physical therapy evaluation, treatment planning, instruction and consultative services
    • The use of roentgen rays and radioactive materials, for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, and the use of electricity for surgical purposes, including cauterization, are NOT authorized under the term “physical therapy”.
  • Topical Medications
    • May apply topical meds using direct application, iontophoresis or phonophoresis.
    • Meds include: bactericidal, debriding agents, topical anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and adreno-cortical steroids
    • May NOT prescribe meds
  • Neuromuscular Evaluation 
    • A PT MAY penetrate tissues for the purpose of NMR Eval
      • Needs auth from physician or surgeon
      • The PT is certified by the board
      • Does NOT make prognostic or diagnostic interpretations
  • Patient Records
    • Must be kept for 7 years
      • Minors must be kept a minimum of 7 year and at least 1 year after they turn 18
    • Must sign legibly
    • Must Initial and/or sign with first initial and entire last name on ALL entries of a student on the SAME day
    • If aide/tech performs something in the POC, name and title MUST be in the note.
